Yuletide Letter 2020

Hi Yule writer -- thanks for writing for me. I hope you get something you love for your own Yule, and plenty of comments as well.

All the best -- W

General notes: I’m fine with any stylistic way you want to go; I have no particular preference for POV, tense, epistolary etc. I’d rather it fitted the fic that you want to write. I’m also happy with shipfic or with gen. I’ve put a bunch of questions in my prompts because I always like having things like that as ideas-starters.

Things I really like: couples, friends or pairings that have strengths and weaknesses that complement each other (even if they don’t always get along!); teams that work together well/complement one another; hurt/comfort; cute characters; iron woobies; odd points of view; happy or hopeful endings. Powerful characters who care for and protect the people they hold dear are a particular favourite, so you’re good if you go with that sort of theme. If you want to go AU, I like ones where the canon setting and roles come into play in some way but something else is very different (like a daemon AU, tropey stuff like wingfic/soulmate tattoos, or a canon-divergent AU).

DNW: underage sex, non-canonical character death (named and nominated characters; if an npc needs to die for a case, that’s okay), dogs (or hairmonsters) dying, high school AUs

Angel of the Crows: Crow, Doyle

Something that explores the world of this story, or the weird friendship between these two would be fab. I'd love to see a reworking of one of the other Holmes stories, especially with Doyle being all snarky about the possible solutions (like with "The Speckled Band" in the book). If you want something more dramatic, put one or both of them in peril and let the other one off the leash, as it were. You could do something really angsty with Crow on the verge of falling? Just don't let him fall, or if he does fall, he's somehow miraculously not a being of evil and destruction.

If you want to go Christmassy and do the Blue Carbuncle, I think it would be hilarious to see Crow trying to work it out. If you wanted to go with something a bit softer, something that explores Crow's relationship with the angels who do and don't like him. Or maybe do a version of "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" because I think that would actually be pretty funny, Crow pretending to be sick and everyone around him going... but... angel? Sick? What?

Greta Helsing Series, Any

Either something set during or after the series -- maybe when Greta is missing in Paris, looking at Ruthven's point of view in more depth, or Varney marvelling over how talented she is when treating patients. You can use any of the characters in the tagset, totally fine with whoever.

Hairmonster dog show fic starring the hairmonsters that Greta rescued and brought back to Dark Heart: Are the hairmonsters elegant and well-behaved winners, or are terrible? (Or why not both?) Who is in charge of training and showing? Do Greta and Varney have a friendly competition against each other, or is it Greta/Varney vs. Ruthven/Grisaille? Or some other combination?

Ruthven canonically enjoys dressing people up (e.g. when he makes Greta look beautiful for the opera). Does he do the same with Grisaille? Does Grisaille let him?

Curtainfic starring Dark Heart Hall as the place that needs said curtains. Could be classic curtainfic with Greta and Varney, but could also be played for laughs with all of the regular crew getting involved

Or maybe the renovations on Dark Heart stir up something more problematic than a few screaming skulls. What is it, and how is it stopped?

Greta and Varney find a lost kid. It latches on to Varney while they're trying to find its parents. Varney is horrified. Greta thinks it's hilarious.

Grisaille getting used to Ruthven being the one who cares for the supernatural folk of London, and getting used to being cared for himself. Bonus if people start treating them as a package deal, and Grisaille doesn't quite know how to cope with this, because he's used to being the bad guy.

I’d prefer that the canon couples are kept together in the ‘present’ timeline, but I’m fine with reference to/fic about different configurations set earlier than the present (e.g. if you wanted Ruthven and someone else to have something going on years ago, all good with me).

Animal Crossing, Flick

My little red, shy, bug-loving favourite visitor! He is 150% adorable when he is blushing about his art, or telling himself to keep cool and not get too excited. He's also really good at his art! Here's a ton of question prompts; hopefully something takes your fancy.

How did Flick get into bugs? Who encouraged his art making? What happens to the bugs he takes as payment (and CJ's fish)?

What is his and CJ's life like (and where tf do they get all that money?) I don't mind if you ship them or if you think of them as friends -- personally I think they probably are a couple. Do they ever visit islands together?

Does he have favourite animals to visit when he's on an island? Does he enjoy teasing Blathers and running around after him with a bug? Or is he more the gentle sort who wants to help, and so he teaches a bunch of the island residents how to deal with bugs in a kind and gentle way?

Just do something cute with Flick and I will be 100% happy. :)

comments

Hi Yuletide writer; thanks a bunch for making a gift for me! I hope you find something here that you will enjoy writing.
Hi Writer,

Thanks in advance for writing for me; I hope you have a good time this Yuletide and that you get something great when the fics are revealed.

General notes: I’m fine with any stylistic way you want to go; I have no particular preference for POV, tense, epistolary etc. I’d rather it fitted the fic that you want to write. The canons are in alphabetical order if you're trying to avoid spoilers for a particular one -- The Broken Earth; The Checquy Files; The Watchmaker of Filigree Street; Whyborne and Griffin.

All the best to you, Yule writer, and thanks again.

-- W

comments
